Artificial intelligence and book indexing: indexer initiatives in 2025
This article provides an overview of initiatives taken by indexers, under the aegis of the American Society for Indexing, to evaluate, understand, and educate book indexers on the matter of AI-generated book indexes. Beginning with an overview of how the initiatives came about and the previous work they built on, Elizabeth Bartmess details the multiple avenues book indexers have taken to confront the question of AI in book indexing.
