GravitationalWavesfromScalarFieldFragmentation: UVSlopeasanObservableDiscriminator
We study the fragmentationof a scalarfieldT(x)witha tachyonicpotential and its gravitationalwave (GW) signature. Using1Dnumerical simulationsandtheHartreeap proximation, wedemonstratethat thetachyonic instabilityleads toexponential growthof fluctuations, followedbynonlinearsaturationandformationof localizedfieldconfigurations (lumps). This fragmentationprocessgeneratesastochasticgravitationalwavebackground withacharacteristicultravioletslopeΩGW(f)∝f−nwithn≃2−3,whichdistinguishes it fromfirst-orderphasetransitions(n∼1)andturbulence-drivensources(n∼5/3).We providesemi-analyticestimatesfortheGWamplitudeandfrequency,andshowthatthesig nalcanbedetectablebyLISA,EinsteinTelescope, andDECIGOforawiderangeofmodel parameters. TheUVslope serves as anobservablediscriminator for futuregravitational wavedetectors.
