Modeling and Simulation of Fully Distributed Event-Triggered Coordinated Control for Traffic Flow Balance
Accurate modeling and simulation of intersection traffic dynamics are indispensable for assessing signal timing strategies, yet cycle-by-cycle controller refresh can be computationally demanding. This paper develops a modeling and simulation framework for fully distributed event-triggered coordinated control (FD-ETCC) that equalizes queue occupancies among competing approaches at a single intersection. A variable-cycle queueoccupancy model is formulated on top of the queue-based description, and a fully distributed coordination law is constructed using model-free information together with an online parameter update rule. To avoid unnecessary updates when traffic evolves smoothly, a dynamic-threshold event-triggered update policy is introduced by jointly considering occupancy deviation, saturation level, and imbalance degree in the triggering decision. Simulation studies indicate that the proposed FD-ETCC achieves traffic flow balance and delay regulation comparable to conventional periodic updates, while reducing the number of control/learning refreshes by 85.9%, thereby conserving computational resources for traffic-system modeling and simulation.
