QoS-aware routing with OSNR-based admission control in WDM optical networks
Abstract This paper presents a QoS-aware routing framework with OSNR-based admission control for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. The proposed approach aims to enhance network performance by jointly considering quality of service constraints and optical signal quality during routing and connection establishment. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is employed to optimize path selection based on multiple objectives, including distance, hop count, and OSNR conditions, while the admission control mechanism ensures that only feasible connections satisfying OSNR thresholds are accepted. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated on the 14 nodes topology under varying traffic loads and compared with conventional routing methods. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly reduces blocking probability and average end-to-end delay, while improving throughput and network utilization under dynamic traffic conditions. In particular, the proposed framework achieves a 15.6 % reduction in blocking probability, a 17.3 % decrease in average end-to-end delay, and a 13.2 % improvement in throughput compared with conventional methods. The results confirm the effectiveness of integrating OSNR-aware admission control with QoS-driven routing in improving the efficiency and reliability of WDM optical networks.
