Looking into the Eyes: Photography, Presence, and the Gaze in the Work of José María Mellado
This paper presents an English translation of the curatorial essay originally written in Spanish in 2016 for the exhibition Mirar a los ojos by Spanish photographer José María Mellado, held at Enlace Arte Contemporáneo, Lima, Peru, from August 11 to September 20, 2016. Rather than offering a technical or formal critique of photography, the essay explores the act of seeing as an ontological event. Photography is approached not merely as representation or documentation, but as a dispositif capable of instituting presence, encounter, and relation. Through reflections on perception, sentient intelligence, unconcealment, and world-opening, the text examines how images participate in the disclosure of reality. Republished ten years later with editorial contextualization and translated into English, the essay also documents an early stage in the development of philosophical themes that would later evolve into broader reflections on appearance, world-making, cosmology, and the role of form in the constitution of reality. This edition constitutes a faithful English translation of the original Spanish text, preserving its content, structure, and argumentative sequence while incorporating only those adjustments required by the translation process.
