Photograph-STDP Middleware - A Biologically-Inspired Architecture for Hallucination Elimination, Continuous Learning, and Efficient Inference in Transformer-Class Large Language Models
Photograph-STDP Middleware presents a five-component neuromorphic middleware architecture that achieves zero citation fabrication across 969 queries in 8 production benchmark runs spanning nine knowledge domains. The architecture applies the functional properties of Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity — temporal co-occurrence binding, use-dependent pathway strengthening, and preferential positioning of reinforced associations — to knowledge records rather than neurons, separating knowledge retrieval from language reasoning at the infrastructure level. A controlled architecture-isolation experiment using identical model, hardware, corpus, and query battery demonstrates a 6.7-fold pass-rate advantage over a keyword-retrieval RAG baseline (100% vs. 15%), attributable solely to the middleware architecture. A 494-million-parameter deployment achieves grounded-retrieval performance comparable to 70-billion-parameter transformer models at approximately 5 watts, with identical fabrication-prevention performance demonstrated across hardware tiers from consumer laptop to dual-GPU server cluster. The paper additionally addresses the structural failure of classifier-based AI safety architecture — illustrated by the June 2026 Claude Fable 5 suspension — and demonstrates why middleware-integrated approaches provide a structurally stronger alternative for both fabrication prevention and misuse control. Patent pending. Independent replication invited. Full benchmark methodology and SHA256-verified result files available in the companion Benchmark Evidence Pack.
