Tribological Applications of <scp> MoS 2 </scp> ‐Reinforced Polymer Composites: A Review

ABSTRACT Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is widely recognized as an effective solid lubricant due to its intrinsically low shear strength and excellent friction‐reducing capability. In the past 5 years, the development of MoS 2 ‐based tribological materials has evolved from nanostructure engineering and surface functionalization to hybrid architectures, defect/doping engineering, and finally application‐oriented composite optimization. These advances have significantly improved filler dispersion, interfacial compatibility, and the stability of tribological performance in polymer systems. However, challenges remain in establishing a clear structure–property–lubrication relationship, achieving long‐term durability under complex service environments, and developing scalable and controllable modification strategies. This review systematically summarizes recent progress in MoS 2 ‐polymer composites for tribological applications, focusing on preparation methods, tribological performance evaluation, lubrication mechanisms, and modification strategies that regulate composite properties. Potential engineering applications are highlighted alongside considerations of safety, scalability, and sustainability, and future research directions are proposed to guide the rational design and large‐scale implementation of advanced MoS 2 ‐based tribological materials.
