Mimograph Original Design Proposal A Precision Gear-Drawing Instrument for Artistic Spirograph-Style Pattern Generation
The Mimograph is an original precision spirograph-style gear-drawing system composed of five 3D-printable components: two ring gears (Honeycomb Ring, 120 teeth; Diamond Ring, 132 teeth), two wheel gears (Honeycomb Wheel; Diamond Wheel), and a Pen-Tip Adapter. All gear geometry is defined using the 40 Diametral Pitch (40 DP) standard (module m = 0.635 mm). The system generates intricate, mathematically precise cycloidal and hypotrochoid patterns through the coordinated rolling of wheel gears inside ring gears. This document constitutes the complete original design proposal, including gear geometry, dimensional specifications, engineering corrections, FDM slicer parameters, tolerance specifications, and print orientation guidance. A companion product specification (MIMO-PEN-SPEC-001) defines the MimoPen Master Set — a purpose-built 19-color refillable highlighter system and UV flashlight engineered for use with this system. The Mimograph was conceived as a bridge between mechanical engineering precision and artistic expression. Traditional spirograph toys rely on injectionmolded plastic gears with coarse tolerances; the Mimograph instead applies formal involute gear geometry at 40 DP to achieve smooth, low-backlash rolling motion suitable for fine-line artistic drawing. By targeting the FDM printing process with explicit layer height, infill, and orientation specifications.
