Beyond the Cut: Fatal Blunt Head Trauma Masked by Postmortem Dismemberment – A Forensic Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract Postmortem dismemberment is an uncommon form of body manipulation that poses substantial forensic challenges, particularly when it obscures lethal injuries. Complete disarticulation at natural joints without associated skeletal fractures is exceptionally rare and may complicate reconstruction of the cause and manner of death. We report the case of a 43-year-old male found dismembered into five body segments, each enclosed in plastic refuse bags and discarded via municipal waste containers. Autopsy and radiological examination revealed fatal blunt-force head trauma characterized by cranial fractures and extensive intracranial hemorrhage. All dismemberment cuts showed an absence of hemorrhage, confirming postmortem disarticulation. Notably, the body was separated at the cervical spine, shoulders, and hip joints without fractures of long bones or vertebrae, representing a rare pattern of complete joint disarticulation. Early scene-based forensic observations – including recognition of specific bag types and knot patterns – prompted rapid coordination with municipal waste services, enabling timely recovery of all body parts. This case illustrates the forensic significance of meticulous scene observation, rapid multidisciplinary collaboration, and comprehensive morphological and radiological assessment. The preservation of skeletal integrity despite extensive dismemberment represents an unusual technical pattern that contributes valuable data to the limited literature on postmortem disarticulation. Careful integration of scene intelligence, autopsy findings, and imaging is essential for accurate determination of cause of death in complex dismemberment cases. This report underscores the importance of multidisciplinary forensic workflows and highlights a rare form of postmortem disarticulation that may otherwise mask lethal trauma.
