The Khaled Two-Cycle Model of Tourism Operations: A Unified Framework of the Traveller's Journey, the Operator's Cycle, and the Intelligence Layer

This working paper proposes the Khaled Two-Cycle Model (K2C Model) of tourism operations — the first published framework to simultaneously model the traveller's end-to-end experiential journey and the tour operator's end-to-end business cycle as two distinct, independent, and recursive cycles connected by an engine-agnostic Intelligence Layer and enclosed within an Ecosystem Ring. The model comprises four structural components: (a) the Traveller's Journey (T-Cycle), a fifteen-node circular journey from Home through Being Travel Active, Destination Research, Frontier Formalities, Health & Safety, Transports, Hotels, Dining & Gastronomy, Guides, Attractions, Local Communities, Experiences, Shopping Interactions, Financial Transactions, and Return Home; (b) the Operator's Cycle (O-Cycle), an eleven-node circular business process from Value Proposition through Brand, Lead Generation, Sales, Itinerary Design, Costing & Quotation, Vendors & Contracts, Operations, Accounts & Compliance, Reviews & Feedback, and Consolidation; (c) the Intelligence Layer, an engine-agnostic connective stratum — human-driven, system-driven, or AI-driven — positioned between the two cycles, mediating their interactions and amplifying human judgment; and (d) the Ecosystem Ring, enclosing both cycles within legal frameworks, industry support (accreditations and association connections), and community ecosystems. Three testable propositions are derived: Correspondence (O-Cycle breakdowns produce T-Cycle failures in predictable patterns), Invisibility of Excellence (operational coherence is experienced as effortlessness), and Amplification (the Intelligence Layer's contribution is proportional to the quality of the judgment it amplifies). Applications for tourism and hospitality education, enterprise practice, and academic research and policy are discussed. The model is specified independently of any particular technology, making it valid across technological eras — from the 1990 operator working from expertise and ledgers to the AI-augmented operator of 2026 and beyond. Supplementary file: K2C_Model_Figure1_parallel.png — the schematic illustration of the model (parallel-layout, publication-quality, 3555 × 2100 px).
