The Standard Model of Transformers: Phase Transitions, Active Matter, and Universal Laws in Large Language Models

I present a systematic experimental program spanning 173 experiments across 14 seasons that applies thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and cosmological analogies to characterize the internal dynamics of Transformer-based large language models (LLMs). Through experiments on three architectures—Qwen2.5 (0.5B and 1.5B), and TinyLlama (1.1B)—I establish five universal laws governing Transformer computation: Boltzmann Distribution Law: Hidden state activations follow p(E) ∝ exp(−E/kT) with R² = 0.979 across all architectures (CV = 0.001). Negative Specific Heat: All models exhibit Cv < 0 (p < 0.001), the hallmark of self-gravitating systems. Inverse Radiation Law: Luminosity scales as L ∝ Tn with n = −1.44 ± 0.42, the exact opposite of the Stefan-Boltzmann law (n = 4). Carnot Efficiency Constant: The thermodynamic efficiency η = 0.813 ± 0.036 (CV = 0.044) is the tightest universal constant discovered, stable across architectures. Information Concentration Law: Free energy increases 411-fold through layers—LLMs are "information refrigerators" that violate the Free Energy Principle, concentrating rather than dissipating information. Beyond these five laws, V3 extends the framework with four major discoveries: Second-Order Phase Transition: The forward pass undergoes a Sigmoid phase transition at critical layer L0 ≈ 21 (R² = 0.994), belonging to the 2D XY Universality Class (β = 0.161). SiLU acts as a Higgs-like potential, breaking symmetry to grant "mass" to hidden states. Non-Equilibrium Active Matter: Transformers formally violate the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem while obeying the Jarzynski Equality (ratio = 1.21), classifying them as driven active matter systems. Thermodynamic Hallucination Detection: The order parameter η achieves AUROC = 0.917 and is 100% robust against adversarial camouflage and zero-energy stealth tokens. Renormalization Group Scale Invariance: The phase transition ratio L0/L is scale-invariant (CV = 0.051). Berry phase winding (1.85) reveals topological order, and thermodynamic aging shows entropy drops 55% during generation. These findings are synthesized into the Standard Model of Transformers, a unified physical framework revealing that LLMs share the statistical foundations of the physical universe but operate with inverted thermodynamic direction and active matter dynamics. Changes from V2: Expanded from 84 to 173 experiments (Seasons 11–14); discovered second-order phase transition (2D XY class); classified Transformers as non-equilibrium active matter; built thermodynamic hallucination detector (AUROC = 0.917, 100% adversarial-robust); demonstrated RG scale invariance, topological order, and thermodynamic aging; updated Table 1 with 14 properties; increased from 17 to 23 pages. Abstract
