Effect of nurse-led intervention on growth and feeding behaviour, among preterm infants: A pilot study

Objectives: Preterm infants are at increased risk for growth retardation, feeding difficulties and delayed neurodevelopmental outcomes. Nurse-led interventions may play a critical role in improving these outcomes through early, structured support. The objectives of the study are to evaluate the effect of a nurse-led intervention on growth parameters and feeding behaviour among preterm infants. Material and Methods: A pilot quasi-experimental study was conducted among preterm infants admitted to a neonatal care unit. Participants were assigned to intervention (nurse-led programme) and control (standard care) groups. The intervention included parental education, feeding support, developmental stimulation and follow-up guidance over 3 months. Outcomes measured included weight gain, feeding behaviour scores and developmental indices using standardised tools. Results: Infants in the intervention group showed improved weight gain, better feeding behaviour and higher cognitive and socio-emotional scores compared to controls. Differences were statistically significant. Conclusion: The nurse-led intervention was effective in improving growth parameters, feeding behaviour, and developmental outcomes among preterm infants.
