Manifesto for a Decolonial Radiology and Radiotherapy: A Biophysical and Clinical Perspective on Skin Tone Bias
English: This manifesto presents a critical biophysical and clinical analysis of skin tone bias in medical imaging and radiation oncology. By examining the optical limitations of current diagnostic protocols—specifically regarding the absorption of eumelanin in the visible spectrum—this work highlights the epistemic injustice faced by patients with high Fitzpatrick phototypes. The author, a senior clinical radiographer and radiation therapist, argues that technical neutrality is a historical oversight. It proposes a transition toward inclusive, quantitative biophysical metrics, such as photoacoustic imaging and federated learning architectures in AI, to guarantee global therapeutic equity and scientific rigor.
