Does Vitamin D Determine The Severity Of Fibromyalgia? An Analysis Of Its Relationship With Clinical Symptoms İn Female Patients

Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and clinical symptoms in female patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia.Materials and Methods: A total of 114 female patients aged 18 to 65 years who were diagnosed with fibromyalgia based on the 2010 criteria of the American College of Rheumatology were retrospectively evaluated. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, pain severity scores measured by the Visual Analog Scale, and functional status scores obtained from the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire were retrieved from hospital records. Patients were divided into three groups based on vitamin D levels, and the results were statistically compared. Results: The mean age of the participants was 50.64 ± 9.37 years. The median serum vitamin D level was 20.50 ng/mL, the median Visual Analog Scale score was 8.00, and the median Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire score was 64.50. There were no statistically significant differences in Visual Analog Scale and Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire scores between the groups categorized according to vitamin D levels (p > 0.05). Furthermore, correlation analyses revealed no significant relationship between serum vitamin D levels and either pain severity or functional status. Conclusion: No statistically significant association was found between vitamin D levels and pain severity or functional status in female patients with fibromyalgia. These findings suggest that vitamin D levels may not be a sole determinant of fibromyalgia symptoms. Further prospective, multicenter, and mechanism-focused studies are required to clarify the relationship between vitamin D and clinical symptoms.
