Comparative Raman spectroscopy analysis of poly(n-butyl methacrylate) and poly(methyl methacrylate): Structural characterization and application prospect
Despite the growing use of poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PnBMA) in flexible electronics and coatings, its definitive Raman spectrum – essential for material identification and composite analysis – has never been established. This study presents the first comprehensive comparative vibrational analysis of PnBMA and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). PnBMA was synthesized and validated by ¹H NMR and FTIR. Raman spectroscopy then revealed its unique vibrational fingerprint. While both polymers share characteristic backbone vibrations, key spectral differences were identified: the PMMA‑specific O–CH₃ rocking band at 993 cm⁻¹ is absent in PnBMA, replaced by new bands at 842 cm⁻¹ (CH₂ stretch) and 1018 cm⁻¹ (O–CH₂ wag) originating from the n‑butyl side chain. This work establishes an essential reference for unambiguous PnBMA identification. Furthermore, it delivers a critical analytical tool for advancing PnBMA‑based materials, enabling precise study of polymer‑filler interactions and stability in next‑generation applications such as antistatic and electronic coatings.
