School-Based Speech Therapy Support for Students with Speech Motor Difficulties: A Dual Case Study from a Malaysian PPKI Setting

Background: Speech motor coordination difficulties may present with characteristics associated with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Documentation of school-based speech therapy support for such difficulties within Southeast Asian educational contexts remains limited. Purpose: This revised preprint documents the functional communication trajectories of two students presenting with therapist-identified CAS-related speech motor characteristics who received school-based speech therapy support within a Malaysian Special Education Integration Program (Program Pendidikan Khas Integrasi/PPKI). Method: A descriptive dual case study design was used, based on longitudinal school-based programme documentation compiled from therapy feedback forms and progress records provided by visiting speech-language therapists between August 2023 and December 2025. Written therapy feedback and progress documentation were available for 24 attended sessions for “Adam” and 23 attended sessions for “Danish”. The analysis reports documented functional communication trajectories rather than formal individual diagnostic assessment or treatment efficacy. Results: The records indicated documented development in listening comprehension, categorisation, and participation in instruction-following tasks for both students, although the level of support required differed between cases. “Adam” showed improvement in speech coordination while continuing to require cueing support. “Danish” progressed to naming items and answering questions spontaneously during later recorded sessions. Conclusions: This dual case documentation illustrates communication changes observed among two students receiving school-based speech therapy support within a Malaysian PPKI setting. The findings are descriptive and context-bound; they do not establish formal CAS diagnosis or causal effectiveness of the support provided. The study contributes practice-based documentation relevant to communication support in Malaysian educational contexts.
