Difference as Morphism: A Category-Theoretic Interpretation of Ontological Differentiation
This release presents Difference as Morphism (v2.0), a category-theoretic reconstruction of ontological differentiation within the The Is Applications Series. Building on the type-theoretic reconstruction developed in The Is v1.0, this work reinterprets the ontological sequence I (Isness) → D (Difference) → S (Structure) → A (Appearance) → F (Feedback) through the language of Category Theory. The central thesis is that Difference should not be understood as an object but as a morphism D : G → U, motivated by an infinite regress argument showing that objectifying difference requires an endless hierarchy of higher-order differences. Within this reconstruction, Isness is interpreted as an initial object, Difference as a morphism, Structure as a category, Appearance as a functorial image, and Feedback as a natural transformation. The framework further develops the emergence of categorical structure through compositional closure and introduces a functorial account of appearance together with a natural-transformation account of feedback. To support critical evaluation, the paper proposes three category-theoretic falsifiability criteria: C1: Morphological Collapse C2: Compositional Coherence Failure C3: Adjunction Failure The work is presented as an interpretive reconstruction rather than a claim of formal equivalence with any specific categorical system. It aims to provide a conceptual bridge between Type Theory and Category Theory through the Curry–Howard–Lambek correspondence while offering a structured framework for analyzing differentiation, structure formation, appearance, and feedback. This release includes the full manuscript, ten figures, and the accompanying demonstration script used to generate the illustrative visualizations.
