A threat to survival: a banditry action in Sapera Meti Kebele, Gidda Ayana District, Ethiopia
Since 2018, organized banditry has surged in western Oromia, with armed groups impersonating the Oromo Liberation Army to carry out robberies, kidnappings, and village attacks. Based on interviews, focus groups, and narratives from respondents in Sapera Meti Kebele, this study reveals how bandits exploit governance failures and ethnic tensions, transforming opportunistic crime into a crisis of ethno-nationalist rhetoric and profit-driven violence. Residents endure attacks monthly, resulting in deaths, injuries, displacement and severe psychological trauma. Cultural jaarsummaa mediation has weakened, spurring vigilantism. Strengthen community security, tripartite mediation, malaria control, livelihood diversification, revive traditional institutions, and regulate vigilantes for sustainable peace.
