Local Knowledge Is Not a Shortcut: A Critical Review of Glocal Pedagogy, Dialogic Teaching, and Epistemic Justice in Science Education
This article offers a critical review of a set of educational, public-health, language, and community-facing texts that share a concern for making knowledge usable within local contexts. Instead of presenting these works as a completed philosophy or as evidence of authorial achievement, the review treats them as a corpus of recurring problems: how scientific knowledge travels across cultures, how learners and communities participate in meaning-making, how public-health information becomes practical reason, and how classroom dialogue can handle sensitive knowledge without reducing learners to passive receivers. The review is informed by constructivist grounded theory, culturally responsive teaching, and social epistemology. It argues that the corpus can be cautiously read through the provisional idea of grounded glocal pedagogy, a view in which educational knowledge becomes meaningful when it is empirically accountable, culturally mediated, dialogically tested, and ethically useful. The article also identifies limits in this orientation. Glocalized pedagogy may become decorative if local culture is merely inserted into lessons; it may become romantic if local knowledge is exempted from critique; and it may become methodologically weak if grounded theory language is used without sustained comparative analysis. The value of the reviewed works therefore lies not in claiming a finished theory, but in opening a philosophical question: how can education honor local experience while still remaining answerable to evidence, disciplinary standards, and public responsibility?
