Enhancing undergraduate medical learning using the jigsaw method
Background The jigsaw method is a participatory learning approach that fosters an engaging and effective learning environment for medical students. We investigated the effectiveness of the jigsaw method in community medicine tutorials. Methods 150 third-year MBBS students were enrolled for the study. The jigsaw method was implemented for two purposefully chosen topics. Student perception was assessed through questionnaires measuring engagement, collaboration, and perceived learning effectiveness. Results Over 80% of students found the instructions clear and the method engaging. The allotted discussion time and group size were perceived as optimal. Positive student perception was reflected in scores exceeding 80% for aspects like in-depth topic exploration, quick revision, and improved communication skills. Students reported high confidence (84%) in answering questions and a clear preference for the jigsaw method compared to traditional methods. Conclusion The jigsaw method promotes student engagement, positive group dynamics, and enhanced understanding of community medicine. High student satisfaction suggests its potential as a valuable tool for educators in medical education.
