Tailam as a Structured Botanical Oil Matrix: A Conceptual Framework for Matrix-Informed Cosmetic Safety Assessment

This manuscript presents a conceptual framework for interpreting Ayurvedic medicated oils, commonly known as Tailams, as structured botanical oil matrices rather than as simple botanical mixtures. The proposed approach distinguishes between botanical input, nominal composition, matrix organization, effective exposure, and toxicological relevance. It argues that the traditional Tailam preparation process may influence phase partitioning, constituent retention, thermal transformation, particle association, slow release, and dermal availability. The framework integrates matrix-informed interpretation into conventional cosmetic safety assessment and margin-of-safety logic. It does not replace established toxicological principles such as ingredient identification, exposure estimation, dermal absorption assumptions, toxicological reference points, or conservative MoS calculation. Instead, it provides an additional interpretive layer for assessing whether nominal exposure assumptions are sufficient or whether a matrix-informed effective exposure estimate may be justified. The manuscript emphasizes that matrix effects should not be assumed to be protective by default, but should be evaluated transparently and conservatively as potential exposure modifiers. Future validation strategies include marker distribution studies, fractionation of oil matrices, batch comparisons, and in vitro release or dermal penetration experiments. This technical note is intended as a conceptual contribution to matrix-informed cosmetic safety assessment, with particular relevance for Tailam-type preparations and related lipid-based botanical systems.
