Impossible conversations: Chardi kala and the limits of forgiveness after Oak Creek
This essay reflects on Sikh responses to racialized gun violence in the aftermath of the 2012 Oak Creek massacre. Moving between personal memory and public discourse, it examines how concepts such as chardi kala and forgiveness have been mobilized to render Sikh grief legible within U.S. Christian-secular frameworks. The essay argues for understanding chardi kala not as transcendence or optimism, but as a non-oppositional practice of endurance that resists moral simplification.
