Implementation of Holistic Training to Improve Psychological Well-being of PE Teachers: Integration of the Concept of MBI-CBT-ACT-SC in Sport and Exercise Psychology
Physical education (PE) teachers are required not only to demonstrate pedagogical and physical competences but also to maintain sound psychological well-being to perform their professional roles effectively. However, empirical evidence regarding integrated training models designed to enhance PE teachers' psychological well-being remains limited. In fact, programmes like this are important to implement in order to improve the psychological well-being of PE teachers. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a holistic training programme integrating Mindfulness-Based Intervention (MBI), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Character Strengthening (CS) in improving the psychological well-being of PE teachers. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, involving PE teachers identified as having low psychological well-being. Of 232 teachers screened, 40 met the inclusion criteria, and 29 completed the entire intervention. Psychological well-being was measured using Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scale, encompassing six dimensions: self-acceptance, purpose in life, personal growth, autonomy, positive relations with others, and environmental mastery. The holistic training programme was conducted over six weeks, with one thematic session delivered weekly through small-group sessions and individual daily practice. Data were analysed using paired-samples <img src=image/19992711_01.gif>-tests. Results indicated a significant increase in psychological well-being following the intervention (<img src=image/19992711_01.gif> = −6.297, <img src=image/19992711_02.gif> < 0.01). The novelty of this study lies in the development of an integrative, holistic training model that combines multiple evidence-based well-being interventions, including Mindfulness-Based Intervention (MBI), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Character Strengthening (CS), and its application to a specific professional group, namely physical education (PE) teachers. These findings suggest that an integrative, holistic training approach is effective in enhancing the psychological well-being of PE teachers and may serve as a practical model for mental health promotion within sport and physical education contexts.
