Economic Drivers of Linguistic Demand: A Study on South Korea's Economic Influence on Korean Language Learners in Central Asia

Korea–Central Asia ties have deep historical roots—from the Afrosiyob murals of Samarkand to the Koryo-saram diaspora—yet historical affinity alone cannot explain the rapid surge in Korean language learning across the region. The primary catalyst is economic: South Korea’s emergence as a global industrial and technological powerhouse has transformed the Korean language from a cultural curiosity into a strategic career asset. For Central Asian youth, learning Korean is a rational investment driven by the expanding presence of South Korean firms and the wage premium that bilingual proficiency commands in the local labor market
