Client-Side DRM Bypass Methods and a Proposed Server-Side Integrity Framework
Imagine buying a lock for your door, but the lock checks itself to see if it's been picked. That's how game DRMworks today — the verification happens on the same machine that's being verified. This paper documentsthree real-world DRM bypass methods — SteamTools, Nightlight Game Launcher, and UplayR2 — and showshow they all exploit the same architectural weakness: client-side ownership verification. We also tested eachtool against 70+ antivirus engines on VirusTotal to document the actual malware risks. Finally, we propose aserver-side integrity framework that game developers can use to detect tampering without breaking offlineplay, modding support, or user privacy
