Differential expression of Musashi 2 in single and double corpus luteum of hybrid Mongolian sheep

This study aimed to investigate the differential expression of Musashi 2 (MSI2) in the single and double corpus lutea of Mongolian sheep (Xing’an black sheep) and its role in multiparity. Results showed two synonymous SNPs identified in the exons of MSI2 . MSI2 was co-localized with GDF9/BMP15 in follicles and corpus lutea. MSI2 expression was significantly higher in single corpus luteum, whereas GDF9/BMP15 expression was higher in double corpus luteum. Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed significant negative correlations between mRNA and protein expression of MSI2 and GDF9, BMP15. The double corpus luteum group exhibited higher levels of P4, LH, E 2 and lower FSH. This study preliminarily elucidates the expression pattern of MSI2 in the corpus luteum of Mongolian sheep. It provides a theoretical basis for exploring the molecular regulatory mechanism of prolificacy in Mongolian sheep, and also offers a potential target for improving the reproductive performance of Mongolian sheep via molecular breeding techniques.
