Susceptibility of spring oat cultivars and breeding lines to crown rust in New York, 2025
Crown rust in spring oat (Avena sativa) is caused by Puccinia coronata var. avenae. Crown rust signs include uredinial pustules that present as small, scattered oval-shaped blisters with bright orange, exposed urediniospores. Crown rust reactions are reported for nine oat cultivars and 19 breeding lines across two field sites in Tompkins County near Ithaca NY in 2025. Both cultivars and breeding lines showed differential susceptibilities to local crown rust populations which will facilitate breeding of spring oat for resistance to crown rust in New York.
