Adaptation of the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement Standard Set for Inflammatory Bowel Disease for Routine Collection in Clinical Practice

ABSTRACT Background and Aims Value‐based healthcare (VBHC) is based on evaluating clinical interventions according to their ability to improve outcomes and costs to finally enhance quality of care. As part of an initiative to introduce VBHC in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), our project aimed to adapt the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) Standard Set for IBD for routine collection in clinical practice. Methods A working group, including three leading clinical experts in IBD and a data analyst, conducted the analyses and a scientific committee, including the IQVIA team and 21 clinical experts, validated the results. The adaptation of the ICHOM Standard Set for IBD included four steps: first, translating the variables to Spanish; second, modifying the variables by analyzing feasibility of collecting structured data, clinical relevance, and redundancy to improve data accuracy and reduce the workload of the clinicians; third, homogenizing the collection criteria to enable comparison between the participating hospitals; and finally, prioritizing a core group of essential variables to facilitate a progressive integration in clinical practice. Results Of the 60 variables of the ICHOM Standard Set for IBD, seven were broken down for feasibility of collecting structured data, eight were added for different reasons, and three were eliminated for redundancy. We finally created a set of 102 variables and prioritized twenty‐eight. Conclusions The ICHOM Standard Set for IBD required extensive adaptation to allow routine collection in clinical practice. Our set could be useful to modify the ICHOM Standard Set for other pathologies worldwide and allow applicability.
