Why Exactly Three Generations: The Order-3 Outer Automorphism of SO(8) in a G2 Framework
The Standard Model contains exactly three generations of matter — three copies of an identical set of quarks and leptons, differing only in mass. The number three is not explained; it is an experimental input, and the Standard Model would be equally consistent with one, two, or four generations. We show that within the G2 algebraic framework established in prior work, the number three is fixed by group theory. The framework's algebra G2 extends to SO(8), and SO(8) is the unique simple Lie algebra possessing an outer automorphism of order three — the triality symmetry, which permutes its three inequivalent eightdimensional representations (the vector 8_v and the two spinors 8_s, 8_c) on an equal footing. We identify the three matter generations with these three triality-related representations. The count follows necessarily: triality has order three, so there are three generations — no more, no fewer. This is a derivation of the generation number, not a fit. We distinguish this result (the count) from the separately established Koide mass relation (which also follows from triality), and note that no other algebra in the Cartan classification offers a threefold symmetry among inequivalent fundamental representations. Keywords: three generations, SO(8) triality, outer automorphism, family number, matter generations, G2 algebra, exceptional Lie algebras, flavour
