The Effectiveness of the Myofascial Release Technique in Minimizing Cervicogenic, Tension-Type Headache, and Migraine– A Literature Review

Abstract:Introduction - Headache disorders such as cervicogenic headache, tension-type headache, and migraine are among the most common neurological and musculoskeletal conditionsworldwide. These disorders significantly affect quality of life, occupational performance, emotional well-being, and daily functioning. Myofascial dysfunction, trigger points, cervicalmuscle tightness, and postural abnormalities are commonly associated with headache disorders. Myofascial release (MFR) technique has emerged as an effective non-pharmacological physiotherapy intervention for reducing pain and improving musculoskeletal function.Aim - The aim of this literature review was to evaluate the effectiveness of the myofascialrelease technique in minimizing cervicogenic headache, tension-type headache, and migraine.Methodology - Relevant literature was collected from electronic databases includingPubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Cochrane Library. Studies involving myofascialrelease interventions for headache management were reviewed based on inclusion andexclusion criteria and 14 articles were selected for the study. Data regarding headacheintensity, frequency, cervical mobility, disability, and functional outcomes were analyzed.Result - The study demonstrated that myofascial release techniques effectively reducedheadache intensity, frequency, muscle tension, trigger point sensitivity, and disability inpatients with cervicogenic headache, tension-type headache, and migraine. Improvements incervical range of motion, posture, soft tissue flexibility, and quality of life were also reported. Conclusion - Myofascial release technique appears to be an effective, safe, and non-invasiveintervention for managing headache disorders. It may serve as an important adjunct toconventional physiotherapy and medical management in reducing headache-relatedsymptoms and improving functional outcomes.
