From Extraction to Integration: Value-Adding Landscape in Brazil's Rare Earth Mining
In the first half of 2026, announced investments in Brazil’s pre-operational rare earth projects totaled approximately US$2.6 billion, driven by a global rush to secure alternatives to Chinese-dominated supply chains. This paper examines the structural characteristics, technological readiness, and value-chain dynamics of Brazil’s emerging rare earth sector. It argues that while the country is well-positioned to become a major supplier of ionic clay-derived heavy rare earths, capturing higher economic margins requires a deliberate shift from raw material extraction to downstream integration. Drawing on project-level data, a six-stage value chain margin analysis, and a comparative case study of Chile’s National Lithium Strategy, the essay outlines domestic policy interventions and international diplomatic pathways necessary to realize a “mine-to-magnet” blueprint. The window for capturing high-value segments of the smiley curve is narrow, and strategic action is required to transform Brazil’s mineral wealth into long-term industrial sovereignty.
