Effect of Moringa-Date Extract as a Standardized Herbal Drink on Angiotensin Converting Enzyme and F2-Isoprostane levels

Hypertension in women of reproductive age is a complex medical problem with serious long-term health implications, affecting both reproductive health and pregnancy. This study aimed to investigate the effect of moringa-date extract herbal drink on Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) and F2-isoprostanes levels in prehypertensive women of reproductive age. The research used a quasi-experimental design with a cross-over approach. Proximate and nutritional composition of moringa-date extract was determined using standard procedures. Moringa-date extract herbal drink was administered at a daily dose of 300 mL for five weeks. ACE and F2-isoprostanes levels were measured before and after the intervention. The nutritional status of the participants was also determined. The moringa-date extract was found to contain 383.47 kcal of energy, 4.23 g protein, 91.64 g carbohydrates, 86.73% antioxidant capacity, 89.36 ppm ascorbic acid equivalent antioxidant content (AEAC), 0.70 mg total flavonoids, 0.41 mg quercetin, and 0.23 mg kaempferol per 100 mL. Consumption of moringa-date extract resulted in a 19.10% reduction in ACE levels and a 15.30% reduction in F2-isoprostanes levels, which was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The development of a moringa-date extract, primarily composed of moringa leaves and date palm fruits, offers potential health benefits due to its flavonoid content, which acts as an antioxidant and ACE inhibitor. This inhibition reduces the effect of angiotensin II within the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS), and promotes vasodilation. As a result, the extract has the potential to lower ACE levels, and F2-isoprostanes levels in pre-hypertensive women of reproductive age.
