STUDY ON THE EMERGENCE OF “ART MUSEUMS” IN REGIONAL CITIES

This study examines the development of art museums in Ibaraki Prefecture from three perspectives. First, it identifies deep cultural foundations, including spiritual traditions, scholarly practices, and Okakura Tenshin’s activities in Izura, that shaped a distinctive reception of the art museum concept. Second, it traces institutional transitions from the prewar to postwar periods, showing how relocations and adaptive reuse of cultural facilities formed a regional operational framework. Third, it analyzes architectural developments after 1980, revealing complementary roles assumed by prefectural, municipal, and private museums within a multilayered cultural landscape in modern regional Japan today and beyond.
