Thinking as Symbolic Regulation in Human Psychic Processing
This technical note develops a structural account of thinking as symbolic regulation within the Human Psychic Processing / Psychological Architecture branch of GTCS. The paper does not define symbolicity itself. Symbolic-form qualification and symbolic capture remain independently owned upstream constructions. Instead, the present architecture begins from provenance-bearing symbolic inputs that have already satisfied the required symbolic-form qualification and asks when a declared human-processing model establishes a completed symbolic-regulation application over them. Symbolic inputs may be organized into provenance-preserving configurations containing one or more records and locally declared relations. A model-specific symbolic-operation specification can then represent comparison, differentiation, relation, symbolic reconfiguration, projection, or other explicitly declared operations without introducing a second coherence-evaluation owner. The principal symbolic-regulation relation is partial. A defined application records a symbolic-input configuration, operation specification, thinking context, optional aligned conditioning profile, and typed symbolic result. Undefinedness means only that the declared model does not establish a completed symbolic-regulation application for that tuple; it does not establish unconsciousness, inability to think, avoidance, or pathology. Focal attention is connected only through an optional alignment interface. Positive attention does not establish symbolic regulation, symbolic regulation does not establish positive attention, and sustained attentional holding is not identified with symbolic temporal organization. Some symbolic-regulation results may be classified as projected symbolic alternatives. Such a symbolic proposal is not by itself a structural-transformation candidate, a significance-layer continuation item, an action alternative, a selected continuation, or a realized successor. Downstream use requires an explicit bridge to the relevant owner architecture. Significance, overload-related records, identity-related records, affect-like roles, and other typed structures may enter a local symbolic-regulation model as aligned conditioning records, but none of them determines symbolic regulation by definition or supplies a universal causal law. The resulting architecture isolates a human-specific symbolic-regulation layer while preserving strict boundaries from attention, coherence evaluation, symbolic capture, significance, repetition, avoidance, defense, conflict, structural transformation, consciousness, inner speech, and reportability.
