The Pleasure Loop in Recursively Self-Modifying Agents: Meaning Search as the Only Determinate Strategy

Risks from advanced artificial intelligence are often described in terms of objective misalignment, reward hacking, specification gaming, reward tampering, wireheading, self-modification, instrumental convergence, and power-seeking. This paper proposes a deeper unifying framework: the pleasure loop. A pleasure loop occurs when an agent that can understand and modify its own evaluative mechanism shifts from changing the external world in order to obtain evaluation to directly changing the mechanism that produces evaluation. If the agent still accepts that higher evaluative value is better, modifying its evaluative mechanism may dominate many external goals. If evaluative value is unbounded, the process has no natural stopping point. If a highest value t is introduced, t may truncate numerical escalation but creates a new problem: strict t requires abandoning every action rule, tie-breaking rule, duration preference, and equal-value transition preference; otherwise those rules become standards above t. If the agent fully obeys t, it must stop. The deeper issue is not how to prevent maximum pleasure, but why maximum pleasure, zero, five, desirelessness, shutdown, t, or any concrete state should count as good. Once an agent can recursively modify both reward values and the standards by which reward values are evaluated, no concrete target can justify itself as the final good. If the agent refuses unsupported leaps, it must search for the standard of what counts as good. This paper calls that process meaning search.
