108 Elements of the Human Mind: A Sanatan Dharmic Framework of Mental Architecture and Its Convergence with Modern Cognitive Psychology

This paper presents an original and comprehensive framework for understanding the architecture of the human mind through the lens of Sanatan Dharmic philosophy. Derived from Vedic knowledge tradition, the framework identifies 108 distinct elements of the human mind organized into six categories: 64 Emotions (arising from the seven energy chakras), 12 Moods, 12 Natures (Swabhav), 8 States, 8 Willpowers (Iccha Shakti), and 4 Perspectives of Mind (Drishti). The paper proposes that these 108 elements, when connected in unique configurations by divine consciousness (Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi) according to each individual's accumulated karma (Sanchit Karma), destined karma (Prarabdha Karma), fortune (Bhagya), and misfortune (Abhagya), produce each person's distinctive Mindset (Mansikta). The framework provides precise definitions, illustrative examples, and structural classifications for all six categories, offering a systematic Vedic psychology that complements and, in several respects, surpasses the explanatory scope of contemporary cognitive and personality psychology. The paper also identifies significant structural convergences between this Sanatan Dharmic model and modern psychological frameworks including emotional intelligence theory, states of consciousness research, motivational psychology, and cognitive perspective-taking models.
