Unveiling the Socio-Psychological Impact of Partition on Women in Cracking India by Bapsi Sidhwa

The Partition of India in 1947 represents one of the most traumatic events in South Asian history, leaving deep socio-cultural and psychological scars. Women, in particular, experienced disproportionate suffering due to gendered violence, displacement, and social marginalization. This paper examines the socio-psychological impact of Partition on women as represented in Cracking India by Bapsi Sidhwa. Using feminist and postcolonial frameworks, the study explores themes of trauma, identity fragmentation, silencing, and resilience. It argues that while Sidhwa foregrounds women as victims of historical violence, she simultaneously presents them as agents of survival and resistance.
