Time and Tide From Utopia to Kraken: Stirring Results in Extraterrestrial Oceanography
Abstract Tides influence the orbital and rotational evolution of planetary bodies, and tides in liquid seas may be important astrobiologically. Tides in the paleoseas on Mars have been evaluated (Jolley et al., 2026, https://doi.org/10.1029/2025JE009292 ) and have been found to be weak, contradicting claims of possible tidal rhythmite deposits at the Zhurong rover site. Tides in Titan's methane seas today are important hydrologically, and the tidal evolution of Titan's orbit and interior are an active topic of research.
