The effect of nanosecond laser cleaning on steel components of Sydney Harbour Bridge
• Nanosecond laser cleaning on Sydney Harbour Bridge steels was investigated. • Laser-induced changes were found as deep as 100 µm beneath the surface. • Recrystallisation and increased hardness were observed at the ablated surface. • High tensile residual stresses were induced at the steel surface by the current laser settings. • For conservation and structural integrity purposes, laser parameter optimization is essential.
