Red Distribution Width, Mean Platelet Volume, and Prevalence of Gender Associated with Diagnostic of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal system. The aim of the study was investigated two routine hematologic indices red cell distribution width (RDW) and mean platelet volume (MPV) and association with gender may be helpful IBS Diagnostic. Methods: In a control case study, 30 diagnosed IBS patients, 15 healthy controls matched in age and gender. Both patients and healthy assessed regarding the differences in mean (RDW) and (MPV). The results: a significantly (p=0.001) decreased in MPV (9.12±0.81) fl were, while a significantly increase of RDW (13.95±1.16) % in IBS patients as compared with those of healthy controls (10.32±0.93) fl and (12.43±0.47) % respectively. Not significantly different (p>0.05) between subtype IBS-C and IBS-D patients in these parameters. A significantly increased (p=0.03, Contingency Coefficient=0.359) with IBS-C in women 13(72.2%), when compared with IBS-D in men 8(66.7%). ROC analysis showed that MPV has a lower (AUC= 0.83, p <0.0001), with a 93% sensitivity and 53% specificity at 10.1 fl, than RDW (AUC= 0.88, p <0.0001), and it had cut-off point at value of 12.15%, with 90% sensitivity and 66% specificity, in differentiating between IBS patients and the healthy controls. Binary logistic regression by forward stepwise model showed that RDW higher significantly (OR= 4.327, 95% CI=1.918–9.76, p-value <0.0001) than MPV (OR= 0.143, 95% CI= 0.047‒0.431, p-value <0.001). Conclusions: RDW a potential marker more than MPV with adequate sensitivity and specificity to categorize between IBS patients from the healthy controls. Also, these parameters available tool may be used in routinely clinical diagnostic for IBS, and it’s not useful for discriminating between subtypes IBS-C and IBS-D in men and women patients.
