The Hidden Indexical Extended
The problem of substitution failure of coreferential names in propositional attitude constructions has figured prominently in philosophy of language. The hidden-indexical theory is a semantic solution to the problem that preserves our pre-theoretic intuitions about truth values. In this paper, I will extend the hidden-indexical theory to other constructions susceptible to substitution failure. I will begin with a discussion of substitution failure in propositional attitude constructions before providing a brief overview of the hidden-indexical solution. I will then extend the theory to constructions involving intensional transitive verbs, modal adverbs, and verb-phrase adverbs. I will conclude with a discussion on where this extension of the hidden-indexical theory leaves us with respect to our traditional semantic apparatus.
