Participation Framework — Part I: Participation Continuity — Sustaining Human Participation in the Age of Continuity Disruption

This paper introduces Participation Framework — a trilogy exploring the structural conditions necessary for sustainable human participation in contemporary civilization. Part I proposes the concept of Participation Continuity: the structural condition in which human beings can continue participating meaningfully in relationships, communities, environments, work, care systems, and everyday life without excessive friction, extraction pressure, nervous system destabilization, or participation exhaustion. The paper argues that contemporary societies increasingly operate within post-continuity participation environments — systems in which participation quantity remains hyperactive while the structural conditions necessary for sustainable participation progressively deteriorate. Rather than focusing on disengagement, the framework proposes that many contemporary crises emerge from the collapse of participation continuity itself. Core concepts include: - Structural Friction - Participation Fatigue - Continuity Fragmentation - Gentle Participation - Quiet Infrastructure - Low-Coercion Systems - Nervous System Sustainability - Cognitive Environmental Degradation - Environmental Trust - Non-Extractive Architecture The framework draws on prolonged observation across independent salon environments, low-friction relational systems, intergenerational continuity structures, and hidden Christian continuity communities in Nagasaki and the Goto Islands. This paper serves as Part I of the Participation Framework trilogy: - Part I — Participation Continuity - Part II — Participation Economy - Part III — Quiet Infrastructure Author: Natsue Tanaka Independent Researcher Concept Originator of Maura Theory
