The Difference Between the Elementary Work of Sequential and Simultaneous Force Processes
This note examines the distinction between the elementary work associated with sequentially performed subprocesses and that associated with simultaneously acting forces. For a decomposition dr = dr1 + dr2 and forces F = F1 + F2, the sequential expression δWseq = F1 · dr1 + F2 · dr2 is compared with the simultaneous expression δWsim = (F1 + F2) · (dr1 + dr2). The difference is shown to be given by the cross terms: δWsim − δWseq = F1 · dr2 + F2 · dr1. The result does not contradict the standard additivity of work for the same elementary displacement. Rather, it clarifies that sequential and simultaneous force processes correspond to different physical realizations or different elementary decompositions of motion.
