Optimization of Smartphone Display Power Efficiency and Visual Fidelity: A Synergistic Approach using Content Adaptive Backlight Control (CABC) and Optical Layer Tuning

This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of a power-saving framework for Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) that integrates a Content Adaptive Backlight Control (CABC) algorithm with optimized optical layer characteristics. While CABC effectively reduces power consumption by dynamically dimming the backlight based on image histograms, it historically introduces trade-offs in contrast ratio and color saturation. To mitigate these artifacts, this research investigates the synergistic effect of combining CABC with a thickened top polarizer (to minimize ambient reflection) and optimized color filters (to narrow spectral bandwidth). A mathematical model for the backlight modulation and pixel compensation process is defined. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid approach reduces current draw by up to 22.59% and device surface temperature by 4.5°C, while simultaneously extending battery runtime by 37.29%. Crucially, optical optimizations restore visual fidelity, achieving an Effective Contrast Ratio (ECR) suitable for sunlight readability and an NTSC color gamut coverage of 83%. These findings validate a hardware-software co-design methodology that balances energy efficiency with high-fidelity visual performance in mobile displays.
