Indicators of metabolic status in the indigenous population of the Yakutia Arctic region

The study of the lipid-carbohydrate profile in indigenous populations of Arctic regions is relevant for analyzing and predicting the populations’ health status and their adaptation to changing environmental conditions and diets. Objective. To assess the incidence of obesity associated with impaired lipid-carbohydrate metabolism in indigenous people in the Arctic in the context of a modern lifestyle. Materials and methods. The lipid profile and glucose levels were analyzed, and anthropometric data were assessed in 156 indigenous people of the Arctic region of Yakutia in modern environmental and lifestyle conditions. Results. It was found that only 20% of the examined persons had normal body weight, 45% had signs of abdominal obesity. Obesity was associated with a shift of the lipid profile towards atherogenicity and impaired carbohydrate metabolism, especially in women. Conclusion. Changes in the lipid profile and glucose levels that do not meet generally accepted reference in the majority of studied subjects indicate the need to develop a regional regulatory framework based on the study of a representative sample of indigenous peoples of the North Arctic to maintain the health of the population, its adaptation to modern environmental conditions, and a changed lifestyle.
