SIMTEGRAL: A framework for integrating process simulation data in life cycle sustainability assessment studies

Growing regulatory pressure and sustainability expectations from politics and customers are driving the need for integrated assessment methods that combine environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) offers a comprehensive approach, but its application is often hindered by data gaps, especially for emerging technologies. This study presents SIMTEGRAL, a novel framework that links process simulation data with LCSA using a novel nomenclature and data schema. By enabling flexible regionalization and scaling, SIMTEGRAL enhances the transparency and reproducibility of sustainability assessments. The framework is demonstrated through a traction battery recycling case study using HSC SIM and Brightway2 software, illustrating improved workflow efficiency and reduced manual effort. Results confirm SIMTEGRAL’s capability to integrate process simulation data into LCSA studies. Open-source code is provided to support future adaptation. SIMTEGRAL is broadly applicable across sectors and offers a scalable solution for aligning process design with sustainability goals.
