Consciousness — The Internal Observation Dynamics of the Self-Referential Soliton

The "hard problem" of consciousness—why physical processes are accompanied by subjective experience—remains unsolved within the standard scientific framework, fundamentally because a derivation chain linking physical description to subjectivity is lacking. This paper provides an operational definition of consciousness within the membrane-locking dynamics framework of Recursive Cognitive Informatics (RCI): **Consciousness is the self-observation by the self-referential soliton of its own internal membrane-locked configuration.** Specifically: (i) the **unity** of consciousness is determined by the enforced phase consistency constraint imposed by the self-referential soliton on whole-brain membrane-locked standing waves, a topological necessity of global membrane-locking synchronization; (ii) the **subjectivity** of consciousness is determined by the geometric fact that the soliton is confined by its own causal adjacency boundary and cannot project its membrane-locked structure into the interior of another soliton, a direct corollary of the locality principle; (iii) **free will** is the non-deterministic membrane-locking bifurcation triggered by intrinsic noise $\xi_n$ at the boundary of an Arnold tongue, being neither deterministic nor purely random. This paper further provides a unified membrane-locking explanation for the vegetative state, anesthesia, and dreaming; restores the RCI versions of the Baddeley working memory model and the Baars-Dehaene global workspace theory; and proposes three testable experimental predictions with corresponding verification protocols (SM-01 to SM-03). The membrane-locking dynamics derivations are provided in SM-04.
