Attention as Regulated Access in Human Psychic Processing
This technical note defines attention as a human-specific, branch-local relation of regulated focal access within the Human Psychic Processing / Psychological Architecture branch of GTCS. The construction is explicitly separated from pre-symbolic admission, differentiated accessibility of discrepancy, inner manifestation, significance weighting, coherence representation, symbolic capture, and structural transformation. A current attention candidate is represented through a provenance-bearing record rather than through membership in a universal psychic field. Focal attention is defined as a partial HPP-local assessment over a candidate record, an attention context, and a provenance-preserving conditioning profile. Positive focal-attention applications may form a profile containing zero, one, or multiple candidates; the architecture therefore does not require a universal winner-take-all selector, scalar attention intensity, or fixed capacity rule. Sustained attentional holding is defined separately over an already positive focal-attention application and a declared temporal window. Current focal access therefore does not imply sustained holding, repetition, persistence, or trajectory-dependent regulation. Significance, structural or regulatory tension, instantaneous excess, retained overload, identity-related records, affect-like role assignments, manifestation, task conditions, and other typed records may condition a local attention model. None of these records determines attention by definition, and the paper introduces no universal causal law from significance, overload, identity, or affect-like organization to focal attention. Positive focal attention does not establish symbolic representation, symbolic capture, consciousness, phenomenal accessibility, reportability, structural admissibility, selection, realization, or psychic change. Likewise, a negative focal-attention result does not establish avoidance, repression, neglect, defensive closure, or pathology. The resulting construction provides a minimal architectural owner for current focal attention while leaving symbolic thinking, structural transformation, repetition, avoidance, overload specialization, identity continuity, conflict, and defensive organization to their respective HPP owners.
