Weak LFM radar parameter estimation and experimental validation of phase calculation approaches

This paper reports experimental validation of our weak RF signal frequency real-time estimation process with precise and accurate measurements for two tones and a new application of our weak signal estimation theory for linear frequency modulation (LFM) radar signals. Prior published research focuses on theoretical results and simulations of proposed weak signal estimation with phase calculation approaches. This work presents experimental measurements that are precise and accurate. It can be challenging to obtain state-of-the-art equipment with factory calibration in order to perform measurements that are precise and accurate. This paper presents the first experimental validation of theoretical weak RF signal estimation process. The state-of-the-art equipment is lent by Keysight Technologies LLC. This equipment includes a state-of-the-art Keysight vector signal generator that is loaned from the factory for these measurements. The vector signal generator operates as the transmitter. A Keysight Mixed Signal Oscilloscope is loaned from Keysight and operates as a receiver. Results obtained with experimental measurements taken with this equipment show that estimates of the weak signal frequency are within a few PPM of the actual weak signal frequency for weak signals that are −20 dB, −30 dB, −40 dB below that of the strong signal. Following these promising experimental validation results, we continue development of our weak RF signal estimation process to consider weak LFM signal parameter estimation in real time.
