REGENERATIVE AI: Architecture, Formal Definition, and Empirical Validation
Abstract We introduce Regenerative AI as a formal category distinct from Generative AI, defined by five properties: experience-driven structural change, episodic memory with emotional weighting, subjective time, honest epistemic boundaries, and identity through accumulation. We present CORTEX, a biologically-inspired neuromorphic platform implementing these properties. Unlike generative systems trained on static corpora, CORTEX acquires knowledge exclusively through direct sensory experience and retains clear awareness of its experiential boundaries. The central empirical finding — and the most significant contribution of this work — is that CORTEX exhibits honest epistemic behavior that is not explicitly programmed: it acknowledges what it does not know from experience, traces the origin of everything it does know, and generates a coherent identity narrative from its actual episodic record. This behavior emerges from the architecture, not from instruction. We provide verbatim transcripts of CORTEX in dialogue to document this behavior. We discuss the theoretical framework underlying the system, including a geometric framework for cognitive state classification, while deliberately withholding certain implementation details that constitute the core of the system's competitive advantage.
